How to Organize Kitchen Cabinets in One Afternoon

Kitchen cabinets get messy for one reason: things go back to wherever there is room, not to where they belong. This four-step method fixes that in a single afternoon.

Step 1: Empty one zone at a time (30 minutes)

Do not empty the whole kitchen at once. Start with the pantry cabinet, then the pots, then the food containers. Put everything on the counter and wipe the shelves.

Step 2: Sort and throw out (30 minutes)

Check expiration dates on every package. Match every container to a lid and recycle the orphans. Group what is left by how often you use it: daily, weekly, rarely.

Step 3: Give each group a home (60 minutes)

  • Dry goods: decant flour, sugar, pasta, rice and cereal into square airtight containers. Square containers stack and line up; round ones waste the corners.
  • Cans and jars: a pull-out basket in the base cabinet brings the back row forward. No more buying a fourth can of tomatoes because you could not see the three you had.
  • Spices and oils: a two-tier turntable in the corner cabinet puts every bottle a quarter turn away.
  • Pans and lids: an adjustable rack stores lids upright so you can lift one without moving the others.
  • Fridge: clear bins with handles sort drinks, produce and dairy, and pull out as a unit.

Step 4: Label and reload (30 minutes)

Label the containers, put daily items at eye level, weekly items below and rare items on the top shelf. The rule for everyone in the house: things go back to the labeled spot.

Keeping it that way

Once a month, spend ten minutes putting back anything that drifted. Because every group has a home, the reset is quick.
